Decorating Cakes Ideas

Our family cat, Nickel, was the inspiration for these birthday cake decorating ideas. All of the kids at my daughter's 8th birthday party went nuts when they saw this cake.

Many birthday cake decorating ideas can be quickly rendered by purchasing a novelty cake pan. This saves the step of cutting the cake into shapes and guides you with an impression on the surface of the cake. When you can't find a pan to suit your needs, you can always cut the cake into a shape with a sharp knife.

The cat's head is created by shaving layers of cake off a little at a time with a knife and building up the features of the face withfondant. The trick to carving the cake without it falling apart is freezing it first.

If you prefer to change the color of cat cake, you can tint the buttercream icing any shade. I chose to use food coloring spray simply to save on time needed for coloring icing and using separate pastry bags.
